How It Works
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme for a girl child, offering one of the highest guaranteed rates among small-savings schemes (currently 8.2%) with full EEE tax status — deposits, interest and the final maturity are all tax-free. A parent or guardian opens the account for a girl under 10 and deposits between ₹250 and ₹1.5 lakh per year. Deposits are made for 15 years from the opening date, but the account continues to earn interest until it matures 21 years after opening (or on the girl’s marriage after 18). Because the money compounds annually — including for the six years after deposits stop — the corpus grows substantially. This calculator takes your yearly deposit and the interest rate, then compounds year by year to show the maturity value, the total you deposited, and the interest earned.
Formula
Deposit at the start of each year for 15 years; the balance compounds annually at the SSY rate and keeps growing until 21 years. Maturity = compounded balance at year 21.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current SSY interest rate?
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana rate is currently 8.2% per year, compounded annually. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter, so it can change — but it is among the highest guaranteed rates available.
How long do I deposit in SSY, and when does it mature?
You deposit for 15 years from account opening, but the account keeps earning interest until it matures 21 years after opening (or on the girl’s marriage after age 18). No deposits are needed in years 16–21.
Is SSY tax-free?
Yes — SSY has EEE status. The deposit qualifies for 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh/year), the annual interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is fully tax-free too. It is one of the most tax-efficient options.
What are the deposit limits for SSY?
A minimum of ₹250 and a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, across all SSY accounts for the child. Missing the ₹250 minimum in a year makes the account inactive until a small penalty is paid.
Who can open an SSY account?
A parent or legal guardian, for a girl child below the age of 10. A maximum of two accounts is allowed per family (one per girl), with an exception for twins or triplets.
