How It Works
A tip is a percentage of the bill added on top. At 20% on an $85 bill the tip is $17.00 and the total is $102.00. To split that between four people, divide the total by four: $25.50 each. The calculator does this for any bill, percentage and group size, and also shows the tip each person is paying and the effective tip percentage. With rounding turned on, each person's share is rounded up to the next whole number and the tip becomes whatever that rounding leaves over the bill, so on $84.30 at 18% for three people everyone pays $34.00, the total is $102.00 and the real tip is $17.70, or 21.0%. The tip is worked out on the amount you enter, so if you prefer to tip on the bill before tax, enter that amount. Check the bill first: some restaurants add a service charge automatically.
Formula
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Each person pays total ÷ number of people.
Tip Amounts at a Glance
The tip on common bill amounts at four percentages. To tip on a different amount, use the calculator above, or work out 10% by moving the decimal one place left and scale from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. A 20% tip on $85 is 85 × 0.20 = $17.00, so the total is $102.00. A mental shortcut for 20% is to find 10% by moving the decimal one place left ($8.50) and doubling it.
Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?
People do both. The calculator tips on whatever amount you enter, so type the pre-tax subtotal if you want the tip based on that, or the full bill if you do not.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. An $85 bill with a 20% tip is $102.00, so four people pay $25.50 each. Set the number of people with the slider and the calculator shows each person's total and tip.
What does rounding up do?
It rounds each person's total up to a whole number, which is easier to pay in cash, and counts the extra as tip. On $84.30 at 18% for three people the shares would be $33.16, so rounding makes it $34.00 each: a $102.00 total and a $17.70 tip, or 21.0%.
What tip percentage should I use?
That depends on the country, the kind of service and your own view, and this calculator does not assume a custom. The buttons offer common starting points to try. Check the bill for a service charge or gratuity that may already be included before adding more.
Can I use it for pounds, euros or other currencies?
Yes. Pick the currency at the top and the amounts are shown in it. The percentage maths is the same in any currency.
