How It Works

Under the Unified Pension Scheme (effective April 1, 2025), government employees with 25+ years of qualifying service receive 50% of their average basic pay as a guaranteed monthly pension. Those with 10–25 years get a proportionate amount. The lump sum is 1/10th of monthly emoluments for every 6 months of service. Family pension is 60% of the employee's pension.

Formula

Assured Pension = 50% of avg basic pay (last 12 months) × qualifying service / 25; Minimum = ₹10,000/month (10+ yrs service)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for UPS?

UPS is available to central government employees who joined service on or after January 1, 2004 (i.e., covered under NPS). Existing NPS employees could opt into UPS by August 31, 2025. State governments may adopt UPS separately.

What is the minimum pension under UPS?

Employees with at least 10 years of qualifying service receive a minimum assured pension of ₹10,000 per month. This is subject to dearness relief (DR) adjustments, just like OPS pensions.

How is UPS different from OPS and NPS?

OPS gave 50% of last drawn pay as a defined benefit — fully government-funded. NPS was a defined-contribution market-linked scheme with no guaranteed pension. UPS bridges the gap: a guaranteed 50% of average pay (last 12 months) with government bearing the actuarial risk.

What is the lump sum payment under UPS?

At retirement, employees receive a lump sum of 1/10th of monthly emoluments (basic pay + DA) for every completed 6 months of qualifying service. This does not reduce the monthly pension amount.
