How It Works
The calculator iterates through every calendar day in the selected range, skipping Saturdays and Sundays automatically. If the 'Exclude public holidays' option is enabled, it also skips India's gazetted national public holidays. Both the start date and end date are included in the count if they fall on a working day.
Formula
Working Days = Total calendar days − weekends (Sat + Sun) − public holidays. Each day from start to end is checked individually against both rules.
Example: Mon 12 Jan to Fri 16 Jan = 5 working days. Mon 12 Jan to Mon 19 Jan = 6 working days (excludes Sat 17 & Sun 18).

Frequently Asked Questions
Are both the start and end dates counted?
Yes — if the start and end date both fall on a working day, both are included in the count. For example, Monday to Friday counts as 5 working days (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri).
Which Indian public holidays are included?
This calculator includes India's gazetted national public holidays: Republic Day (Jan 26), Holi, Good Friday, Ambedkar Jayanti (Apr 14), Independence Day (Aug 15), Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2), Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and Christmas (Dec 25). State-specific holidays are not included.
How do I calculate working days in Excel?
Use the NETWORKDAYS function: =NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, [holidays]). It counts whole working days between the two dates, including both endpoints. The optional holidays argument accepts a range of dates to exclude.
What if my start date is a weekend?
If the start date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is excluded from the count — only the working days within the range are counted. The calendar days total always includes every day regardless.
