💡 Paying only an assumed 3% minimum (at least $35) instead would take 14 yr 8 mo and cost $6,677 in interest.

What a bigger payment does

Doubling the payment to $300 would clear the balance in 1 year 9 months and cut the interest to $1,022. Small increases matter most early, when most of each payment is interest.

$5,000 at 22% APR. Payments at or below the first month's interest never clear the balance.

If your APR is different

Cards differ a lot. Look for the APR on your statement and see how it changes the payoff.

The minimum-payment trap

A minimum that is a percentage of the balance shrinks as the balance shrinks, so each payment barely outpaces the interest. On $5,000, an assumed 3% minimum (at least $35) takes 14 years 8 months and $6,677 in interest, against 4 years 4 months and $2,798 at $150 a month. Your card's real minimum may differ, so check your statement.

Before you rely on these numbers

  • Card issuers charge interest daily on your balance. This page uses APR ÷ 12 each month, which is close but will not match a statement to the cent.
  • New purchases, fees and any change in your APR are not included.
  • The avalanche method (highest APR first) costs the least in interest; the snowball method (smallest balance first) costs a little more but gives early wins.
  • This is general information, not financial advice.
