₹5,000 SIP for 10 Years: What It Could Grow To
A ₹5,000 monthly SIP for 10 years could grow to about ₹11.62 lakh if it earns 12% a year. You would put in ₹6 lakh, so the estimated gain is ₹5.62 lakh.
The 12% is an assumption, not a promise. Equity funds do not return a steady 12% every year, and over any given 10 years the result can be well above or below this figure.

The first decade is the slow part
After 10 years the gain (₹5.62 lakh) is still smaller than what you contributed (₹6 lakh). Gains only overtake contributions in year 11. Compounding does most of its work late, which is why people who stop or pause in the first few years give up the part that grows fastest.
If returns are not 12%
The same ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at different annual returns:
| Assumed return | Estimated value | Estimated gain |
|---|---|---|
| 8% | ₹9.21 lakh | ₹3.21 lakh |
| 10% | ₹10.33 lakh | ₹4.33 lakh |
| 12% | ₹11.62 lakh | ₹5.62 lakh |
| 14% | ₹13.1 lakh | ₹7.1 lakh |
Two levers you control
- Start earlier. Waiting 2 years and investing for 8 instead of 10 gives ₹8.08 lakh instead of ₹11.62 lakh, a difference of ₹3.54 lakh for ₹1.2 lakh less invested.
- Raise the SIP each year. Increasing it by 10% every year takes the 10-year value to ₹16.87 lakh on ₹9.56 lakh invested. Many people can manage this because pay rises over time too.
In today's money
If prices rise 6% a year, ₹11.62 lakh in 10 years buys what ₹6.49 lakh buys today. The 6% is illustrative; the point is to judge the target in terms of what it will actually buy.
Tax on the gain
For equity mutual funds held more than a year, gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year were taxed at 12.5% under the rules we last checked (FY 2025-26). Debt and hybrid funds are taxed differently. Check the current rules or ask a tax professional before relying on this.
Common questions
How much will ₹5,000 a month become in 10 years?
About ₹11.62 lakh at an assumed 12% a year, or ₹10.33 lakh at 10% and ₹9.21 lakh at 8%. The amount invested is ₹6 lakh.
Is 12% a realistic return?
It is a common planning assumption for equity funds over long periods, but nothing guarantees it. Some 10-year stretches have returned much less. Treat the 8% and 10% rows as sensible alternatives.
What if I miss a month?
Missing one instalment lowers the final value slightly. Missing several in a row matters more, because each missed contribution loses its years of growth. Automating the SIP on salary day avoids this.
Can I increase the amount later?
Yes, and it helps a lot. A 10% yearly step-up lifts the 10-year value from ₹11.62 lakh to ₹16.87 lakh.
