Monthly SIP for ₹1 crore
The pattern is time first, return second. Twenty years needs ₹10,009 a month at 12%, about half of the ₹19,819 for 15 years. Ten years needs ₹43,041, more than double. A 2-point difference in return changes the 15-year figure by only a few thousand rupees, while five extra years changes it by about ₹9,810.
| Time to goal | At 10% | At 12% | At 14% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 years | ₹48,414 | ₹43,041 | ₹38,155 |
| 15 years | ₹23,928 | ₹19,819 | ₹16,317 |
| 20 years | ₹13,060 | ₹10,009 | ₹7,597 |
| 25 years | ₹7,474 | ₹5,270 | ₹3,667 |

A crore later is worth less
In 15 years, ₹1 crore will not buy what it buys today. With 6% a year inflation (illustrative), it would buy what ₹41.73 lakh buys now. To have ₹1 crore of today's buying power in 15 years, you would need ₹2.4 crore, which takes about ₹47,496 a month at 12%.
So decide whether the goal is "₹1 crore" or "enough to cover what I plan to spend", and set the target in future rupees accordingly.
A step-up route to the same goal
You do not have to start at ₹19,819. If you raise the SIP by 10% a year, you can start at about ₹11,516 a month and still reach ₹1 crore in 15 years at 12%. The trade-off is that the amount keeps growing, reaching about ₹43,731 a month in the final year.
What can go wrong
- Returns are uneven. A bad stretch near the end hurts more than one at the start, because by then the balance is largest.
- Missed or paused instalments reduce the result, and the effect is bigger if they happen early.
- Fund charges and taxes reduce what you keep, and neither is in this table.
Common questions
How much SIP is needed for ₹1 crore in 10 years?
About ₹43,041 a month at 12%, or ₹48,414 at 10%.
How much SIP is needed for ₹1 crore in 20 years?
About ₹10,009 a month at 12%, or ₹13,060 at 10%.
Is 12% guaranteed?
No. SIPs in equity funds carry market risk. The table shows 10%, 12% and 14% so you can see how sensitive the plan is. Using 10% is a more cautious way to plan.
