The rule: divisible by 4 is a leap year, but century years (1900, 2100) are not — unless also divisible by 400 (2000 was).

How It Works

A leap year has 366 days instead of 365, with an extra day added as 29 February to keep our calendar aligned with Earth’s orbit around the Sun (which takes about 365.2422 days). The rule has three parts: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, but century years (those ending in 00) are an exception and are only leap years if they are also divisible by 400. That is why 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, while 2000 was. This extra refinement stops the calendar from drifting over centuries. Enter any year and the calculator tells you whether it is a leap year and explains exactly which rule applies, then shows the number of days in February (28 or 29), the total days in that year, and the next five upcoming leap years — handy for planning and for settling the occasional debate.

Formula

A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 1900 is not a leap year, but 2000 is.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rule for a leap year?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years (ending in 00), which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are not.

Why isn’t every 4th year a leap year?

Because a solar year is about 365.2422 days, not exactly 365.25. The “divisible by 4” rule slightly overcorrects, so century years not divisible by 400 skip the leap day to keep the calendar accurate over time.

Was 2000 a leap year?

Yes. 2000 is divisible by 400, so it is a leap year despite being a century year. In contrast, 1900 and 2100 are not, because they are divisible by 100 but not 400.

How many days are in a leap year?

366 days — one more than a normal 365-day year. The extra day is 29 February, giving that month 29 days instead of 28.

When is the next leap year?

Enter any year and the calculator lists the next five leap years. Leap years occur every four years, with the century-year exceptions noted above.
